Common Pitfalls and Misconceptions in Managing Food Allergies in Dogs and Cats

Adverse food reactions are among the most frequent yet misunderstood conditions in small animal practice, often leading to unnecessary testing, prolonged clinical signs, and frustration for both pet owners and veterinarians. This lecture addresses the most common pitfalls and misconceptions veterinarians encounter when diagnosing and managing food allergies in dogs and cats — from why serology and saliva panels can be misleading to navigating the practical challenges of achieving strict owner adherence to an elimination trial. We will review the current evidence on diagnostic accuracy, discuss practical strategies for selecting appropriate elimination diets (including hydrolysed, novel protein and home-made options), and outline how to structure a realistic, client-friendly food-challenge protocol. Clinical cases will also be presented and discussed.
